MHLC Annual Update with Annie, Donna, and Jason

For the first Community of Practice of 2025, the founders of the MHLC (Donna, Annie, and Jason) present their annual update, outlining progress from 2024, giving an overview of goals for the upcoming year, and sharing insights from our Dec. 4th annual meeting in Orlando. Using Mental Health Literacy as a School Mental Health Prevention Tool

Mental Health Literacy (MHL) equips students and school staff with the knowledge to recognize, manage, and prevent mental health concerns in a timely manner. By raising awareness, reducing stigma, and teaching effective coping strategies, MHL fosters a supportive school environment where mental health and well-being are consistently prioritized. As a preventive tool, MHL helps build a culture of care, enables early intervention, prevents the escalation of mental health issues, and contributes to long-term cost savings for the community.

Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI): MHL a Key Piece of Comprehensive MH Systems

This session will focus on the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) use of mental health literacy as a key strategy to advance Comprehensive School Mental Health Systems in Wisconsin schools. Presenters will share practical examples of how mental health literacy is integrated into system improvement work and highlight a variety of DPI resources available to schools and districts.

You’ll also learn about ways you can support youth mental health literacy with Crisis Text Line resources.

CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health: Supporting School Mental Health Literacy

This discussion will highlight one of CDC’s tools for strengthening school health curricula, the Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT). The HECAT can be used by school districts, schools, and youth-serving organizations to develop, select, or analyze mental health education curricula. Join us to learn how CDC’s HECAT could support mental and emotional health education and literacy among youth.
